The evangelicals in America are no longer the monolithic block of moral conservatives that they once were. There's a new "Jesus for President " movement afoot that will further erode John McCain's tepid support among Christian conservatives. The old conservative flash point of gay marriage is now just one issue that conservatives care about and see as the domain of the religious.
Poverty, the environment and stopping the war in Iraq are all now issues that animate this group. None of those issues are John McCain territory.
The new movement even has a leader. No, it's not Jesus. He's a dreadlocked, veggie-oil bus driving hippie named Shane Claiborne.

You think there's a big groundswell of support for the Obanma agenda of homosexual marriage and publicly funded abortion without parental consent?
This, like so much of the jibber jabber in the national media is based on nothing more than liberal optimism.
Of course, that isn't to say that Johnny Mac will do nearly as well as previous Rs with the evangelical or social conservatives since he has also worked against that agenda for most of the last nine years.
With all this blather about change, the death of the Republicans etc.. I am reminded that only Reagan was the only post 23rd amendment two term president to be succeeded by a President of his own party in an open election, and only TR and Calvin Coolidge and US Grant before them since the birth of the GOP.
