Females: Friends Don't Let Friends Vote Republican!

Images_2

A few days ago, I wrote a post on why women should not vote for John McCain in the next election. Aside from the depressing fact that very few women probably read my blog, absolutely no one commented on the post. That tells me that either everyone already knows what a putz John McCain is and can't bring themselves to defend him, or that people don't know how dangerous it will be for women's rights to have him in office.

My mission in life for the next five months is simple. Friends don't let friends vote republican. Especially women.

Every time I meet a female republican, i'm always struck by a common theme. They're either republican because they grew up in a republican household and just never bothered to question it, are republican because their husbands are, or they are just plain old right-wing nutjobs. These are the three categories. I think the last one is a loss, but the first two are definitely persuadable.

Engage your republican women friends in conversation. Ask them sincerely about their beliefs on important women's issues like the right to choose, and they will secretly confide: "Well, I believe in that right." Ditto for equal pay. "Of course women should be paid the same as men when working in the same job."

Ask them about domestic violence and the fact that it's pretty much the same jail time for kicking a dog as beating up a spouse or girlfriend. They'll tell you that it should be more serious to injure a person. Ask them if they think that contraception should be made available at a discount to adult women on college campuses. They will all say yes. They themselves will recall what it was like to be in college and how thankful they were for student health services on campus.

On health care, ask them if they think that basic health care coverage should be provided to all. Ask them if they think that providing daycare to women who are clawing their way out of poverty is key to gaining self sufficiency.

Once you are done thoroughly listening to their answers, then ask them why they would even considering voting republican. Republicans want to talk about taxes and tax breaks. They want to take away a woman's right to choose and her access to safe and affordable birth control. They focus on social ills, but not what causes the problems. They throw people in jail for many years, and then refuse to consider new prisons until someone escapes. They are also known for not funding drug treatment programs that keep people out of jail in the first place.

Maybe they just THINK they are republicans, when all along they've been democrats. Give them a chance to realize that their vote counts. Then close the deal. Ask them to vote for a democrat this fall. It could make a very big difference.

You are great at name calling but never really explain yourself. And please learn to capitalize political parties.

Claire:

The net is filed with frustrated English teachers.

Are you telling me that college girls are promiscuous?

On a more serious note: The abortion debate has always confounded me. I am not a religious person but I can understand those who feel that abortion is not something that God necessarily approves of. At the same time none of us, including the Pope, should deign that we can speak for God.

Are there frivilous abortions? Perhaps. If so, they would not be the majority. I would feel that for most women it is a serious and extremely difficult decision.

Since religion teaches us that God gave us free will and the ability to decide for ourselves what is necessary or desired, it would follow that each of us has the "right" to make decisions and then answer to God, personally, at some later point about those decisions. It does not seem to me the right or responsibility of government, nor of society, to make that, oh so, personal decision.

If all that is reasonable then the government does have a responsibility to insure that the process can be handled in a safe, clean environment. An environment devoid of hacks and coat hangars.

Claire,

How do you feel about women who are pro-life?

While I'm pro-choice myself (and a man), I think our party has gone horribly wrong in making being pro-choice a litmus test for so many of our politicians. I really think we should be much more accommodating to the pro-life sensibilities. After all, we are talking about a very tough ethical call about life and death. I think we should have much more understanding for people who are not comfortable with abortion and may oppose it.

Also, from a purely political perspective, we would make huge gains if we took the abortion issue off the table for R's. They have been milking that issue for a very long time, and in some ways the issue only keeps getting better for them - as long as people keep having babies and ultrasound pics keep getting better.

Dear Claire,

I grew up a Republican, my husband is a Republican, and I am also a right-wing nut job, so I guess that makes me blessed x 3. If you had any brains you would do your research on John McCain's record and see that he is not a threat to your precious "woman's rights". Why don't you just wake up and see that you are doing more harm than good when you demand all these things. I guess we really are the weaker and dumber sex if we need all this help from the government to make our lives productive. By the way, even though I am a Republican, I am still pro-choice. The choice is whether or not to engage in the act instead of the choice being whether or not to terminate the consequences. (And don't throw the rape and incest crap at me like every other liberal does--make a more solid argument instead of using 1% of the unwanted pregnancies out there.) Grow-up and be a WOMAN.

Iowans Rock:

No doubt universal celibacy could go a long way to ending abortions. There are a few who might consider it a rather extreme solution.

It has promising aspects though. Just think, if we outlawed all fornication, then pregnancy would be absolute proof of a violation of the law. Notwithstanding the lessons we learned about releasing sperm in the general vicinity.

It could even return us to the foundings of Greek culture.
