The "Facebook Effect Candidacy": The Power of Social Networking in Obama's Victory

ObamaWhen my "old" friend Gordon Fischer picked Obama to support a few months back, I thought he was trying to relive his youth by picking a candidate mostly supported by young people. He and I are both around 40, and there wasn't many people over 40 supporting Obama. Most of my young friends and colleagues were supporting Obama, and most are members of Facebook and other social networking sites.

But I didn't fully make the connection until this morning. Social networking sites like Facebook really helped to turn the tide for Obama. Gordon used Facebook to communicate with his blog's readers, and by reading about the turnout on college campuses. He also correctly predicted a record turnout for the Iowa Caucuses.

You have to be a member of Facebook to check out the Obama groups, but one even sprang up just in the last week called, "come and caucus for Obama." Hillary Clinton, who's main supporters are mostly older people who don't use social networking, didn't get the message quite as strongly.

This is an irreversible trend! Social networking is an indispensible campaign tool and cannot be ignored!

There are two kinds of Hilary supporters this morning, the ones who say"Bring me my crow so I can eat it, learn something and "move on""(gotta love that reference, huh?, and those poor fools who are still spinning.

There is no reason for anyone to eat crow. Hillary turned out an impressive number of people on a cold Iowa night and her campaign has no reason to hang their heads.

I'm impressed with Obama's turnout, as we all should be. But it's a great year for democrats, and we'll all be proud to vote for whomever is picked for the nomination.

That is a far more enviable place than the republicans are in. Huckabee has got their undies in a bunch and any of their nominees will have a very hard time winning the general election.

Noble of you. I don't think I could proudly vote for HRC, but I am SURE I won't have that dilemma-should have seen my caucus group: 440 strong (88 last time) all women under sixty for Obama, all kids for Obama, Obama's 21 year old precint captain!it was awesome. TIRED of Boomers even though I am one!

it's almost sad to watch the flailings of Clintonistas to look undeterred now that the rest of the world knows the empress has no clothes..From a reporter I know at The Post:"Clinton's past, of course, is so well known that her claims to be an agent of political change had people laughing in the Iowa caucuses and very well could sap her lead here in New Hampshire."

I forgot to sign last comment, sorry:
