I rented the movie "A Mighty Heart" the other night. It was set in Pakistan in 2003 and faithfully recounted the abduction and murder of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl. Anyone who wants to get a closer look as to what it might look and feel like to live in Pakistan must see that movie.
Imagine my surprise, when, the very next day Pakistan is the breaking news story of the week. General Musharraf, to whom the U.S. has given more than $10 billion dollars, has suspended the constitution, declared Marshall law and arrested thousands.
In another example of how the U.S. funds thugs all over the world, Musharraf if just the latest in a long line to go off the deep end. When will the U.S. learn its lesson? It always comes back to bite us in the ass. Remember the Sandinistas? How about Saddam Hussein? The lesser of two evils is not the way to go.
The aid we're giving Pakistan would be much better spent here in our own country, providing health care for children.
