Al Gore and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change won the Nobel Peace Prize today for their tireless work on bringing the climate crisis to the attention of the world.
Gore, in his truly humble style, will give the whole prize to the group, despite the fact that he used a portion of his own money to get out on the road to give his "Inconvenient Truth" slide show. He also gives all the credit to the scientific community who've been spending years researching, documenting and talking about the climate crisis.
There have been times when I've cursed the Gods for allowing George W. Bush to become president, usurping Al Gore's lifelong goal to become president of the United States. But in many ways I am grateful that he was forced to take a much less glamourous path, one that led him to where he is now. His legacy transcends political and national boundaries.
It was an honor to work for Gore, meet his family and simply to be associated with a man who has contributed so much to the global warming debate. I hope our next president has the capacity to recognize the U.S. responsibility to lead by example on this issue.
