I always get a little sad on 9-11. It's my parents' 42nd wedding anniversary, and it makes me sick that they have to share their day with such bad memories. I was pretty mellow last night, and being the news geek that I am, sat in front of CPAN to watch a re-broadcast of General Petraeus' report to Congress.
Today, I got to thinking about "the surge." It has been given a life of its own. And I compiled this list of all the other surges we need in this country.
- We need a surge of good teachers and nurses, and the money to pay them fairly.
- The victims of Hurricane Katrina need a surge of goodwill and to have their destroyed houses rebuilt.
- Our broken healthcare system needs a surge of common sense and compassionate reform.
- School children in the poorest districts need a surge of music, PE and recess. No Child Left Behind is leaving a lot of children behind.
- The White House needs to have a democratic surge. 'nuff said.
- Congressional republicans need a surge of morality to go with their hype.
- College students need a surge of good-paying jobs to help them pay off their record-level student loans.
- Mortgage and credit companies need a surge of compassion to the families who are struggling to pay their debts.
- Fred Thompson needs a surge of reality check. He is not the second coming of Christ.
- American children need a surge of low-cost health care programs to help them stay healthy.
