I wonder if the republican front runners think they can win a hotly contested presidential election with only sparkling white christian voters. That must be their game plan. Romney, Giuliani and Thompson all plan on skipping the Morgan State University debate to be hosted by Tavis Smiley and broadcast by PBS. This, after Univision had to cancel the republican hispanic debate due to the fact that only McCain RSVP'd, is more evidence that people of color and other minorities (gay people come to mind) do not matter to the republican party.
Michael Fauntroy talks about these subjects and more in his new book, Republicans and the Black Vote, and blogs about it at http://tools.knowmoremedia.com/cgi-bin/www.MichaelFauntroy.com. He is an assistant professor of public policy at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.
Demographically speaking, ignoring black and hispanic voters is political suicide for the republican party. Perhaps Karl Rove can come back and save them from themselves. But I doubt it. There is nothing in it for them. Relatively speaking, there are very few black millionaires, and most of them are supporting democrats, so why bother? The severe and hateful anti-immigration stance of the party has ruined their chances with hispanic voters.
