2008 is setting itself up to be a perfect storm for the democrats in the U.S. Senate election. Republicans are defending 22 seats compared to 12 for the democrats. The right side of the aisle is also losing several senators to retirement and scandal, while the democratic attrition thus far is ZERO. Due to the continuing anti-war sentiment. republicans in traditionally democratic states, such as John Sununu of New Hampshire and Susan Collins of Maine are in big trouble. Norm Coleman (R-Minnesota) is also on a slippery slope. His state's experimentation with a republican senator and governor is looking like a bad mistake.
Robin Toner over at the NY Times has a comprehensive analysis of the likely gains to be made by democrats in the 2008 election. You must register for this site, but it's worth it. The Times has been doing a great job covering just about every angle possible this cycle.

Claire,
I'm an independent who is open to, and frustrated with, the views and actions of both sides of the aisle. If you honestly feel that Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi are doing an admirable job in leading the Democratic majorities, you are more disillusioned than I thought. Your "blank check" to the Dems needs to be cashed in for a "reality check"!
