Finally, an honest man has stepped out of George Bush's shadow and made an honest statement about Iraq.
President Bush has nominated General Michael Mullin to head the Joint Chiefs of Staff. During questioning in the Senate last week, Mullen gave this stark assessment of the "surge" and whether it really matters.
"Failure to achieve tangible progress toward reconciliation requires a strategic reassessment," Mullen said in a written statement to the Senate Armed Services Committee at his confirmation hearing to become Bush's top military adviser.
In other words, it doesn't matter how many troops are on the ground in Iraq, if the Iraqi political leaders don't find a way to put their country back together, there will be no resolution.
While we are losing our brave young men and women by the dozen each month, the terrorists in Afghanistan and Pakistan are gearing up for another run at us. It's like playing Whack-a-Mole, only we don't have enough hammers and moles are multiplying exponentially.
