In a bold, bipartisan way, the U.S. House passed a bill vastly expanding the State Children's Health Care Program (SCHIP), which covers children of the working poor. The measure goes to the Senate today where a more modest version has all the support it needs to avert a presidential veto.
President Bush is opposed to expanding the program, which he believes is a slippery slope to socialized medicine. How any congressman, senator or member of the administration, who gets their health care completely provided by the taxpayers of the United States can actually object is beyond my imagination.
I'm sure he's never wondered how to provide insurance for his family. I had to purchase insurance with a $3,000 deductible when I was a daycare provider in the early 1990's. It was a sheer coincidence that none of us got seriously ill during that time. I wouldn't have been able to afford anything, let alone quit my job to care for a sick child. There but for the grace of God go I.
So, President Bush, soap yourself up, and start sliding, because the slippery slope to universal health care is coming! And it's people like you and the greedy insurance companies that made Americans ready to slide down the slope too.
