Paul and Romney Launch Hateful Anti-Immigration Ads

Ron_paul_billboard Ron Paul billboards are appearing on the Des Moines landscape lately. Thanks to the Kansas City Ron Paul blog site for the photo. It is identical to the billboard in Des Moines that I drive by on my way to work.

As someone who works in the design and marketing business, it pains me to see a billboard this ugly and poorly conceived. The messages are pretty ugly too. Ron Paul is using the anti-immigration debate as a calling card of his campaign and along with "Get Rid of the IRS" and "End the War Now" is a mixed bag of stuff to think about. It's almost as if he took three candidates from all over the political spectrum, threw them all into a blender, and poured them all onto one big banner. Ouch. The results are not pretty.

The Paul campaign is using some very Howard Dean-esque tactics here in Iowa. They're taking lists of super activists like me and having people from other parts of the country call and ask for support of the campaign. Charlotte in Pennsylvania called me and left a message, saying she'd "never campaigned for anyone in her entire life, but Ron Paul's message resonated with her."

I admire your pluckiness, Charlotte, but you're barking up the wrong tree!

Mitt Romney is also running extremely anti-immigration ads. I wonder if he knows who are building all of the new houses in and around his mother-land, Salt Lake City. You guessed it, illegal Mexicans. So his proposed employer fines would be hitting his home town very hard.

A "super activist" like you should know.
Yes, after q1 “they” said his $500,000 fundraising was pitiful and he would likely do no better in q2.
Let the record show “THEY” were DEAD WRONG…
He not only quadrupled his fundraising, but thanks to REAL grass-roots support, he only had to spend about $600,000 to accomplish this growth. He’s already doing better than Clinton in 1991 and Carter in 1975.
Just do the mathematical regression on the growth achieved so far. “THEY” will be eating their words, or regretting that they foolishly opened their mouths.ABOUT ILLEGALS:
what part of ILLEGAL do you not understand?
THEY DO THE CRIME THAT AMERICANS WONT DO...

Because when you can't win an argument with logic, just call the person you're arguing against "hateful" and you automatically win!

It works with other words too! Like racist, homophobe, communist, anti-American, bigot, anti-semite, radical, extremist, socialist, etc.

I also like how you refer to Romney's "mother land" (SLC) because he's mormon. Nice... That's very 'tolerant' on your part.

I will agree with you that the billboard blows, design-wise. He also should learn to target his message based on the audience in that locale.

Just as an FYI, the Ron Paul campaign didn't put that sign up. You might want to check your facts the next time you want to have a slam piece against Dr. Paul.

Please forgive me.

But I don't understand how that billboard is "hateful."

What's wrong with stopping illegal activity?

Are we a country of laws or not?

Immigrants and tourists need to check in when they travel to this country. Just like we need to check in when we travel to other countries. It's not a big deal. Unless you are a criminal.

We have a right to know who is here in our country and why.

And we can no longer afford to have open and porous borders. And we can't afford to pay welfare and other social programs for folks that don't throw their full share into the tax pot. We just can't afford it. The GAO Comptroller General David Walker says we are broke. And if we don't drastically cut the size of our entitlement programs and the Federal government. We will ruin our country and literally sell our children and grandchildren into financial slavery.

This is not the time to be sharing our wealth with our brothers and sisters from Mexico. God bless them but they need go find work somewhere else. We can no longer afford to pay for them to come here and take from us.
Because only those immigrants that abide by the law actually give something back to our society. It's not that hard to become a citizen of the United States. It just takes a long time and it cost more than money. You have to become an American. And that requires respect for the laws, the culture, the language and the people of the United States.

This is basic stuff.

Three things the writer of this blog forgot to put in it,

The sign in question says 'No ILLEGAL Immigration".

Start at 47 minutes into this video up to 1:48 minutes into this video.

Dr. Paul talks about immigrants being used as the scapegoats on immigration.

Lastly, go to any countries website concerning how to LEGALLY enter into their country and you will find that condition #1 is:

You will be gainfully employed or a skilled laborer.
Most countries have a points system for speaking the native language, have a skill of some form, be under a certain age, if married have a spouse that has a similar skill level or higher.

Why is it in the US we aren't allowed to protect our borders? I why should we take orders from the head of Mexico when there immigration requirements x3 stricter than what the US has.

Give us a break, you just want to whine about Dr. Paul.

Oh Good! Yet another blogger who is under the umbrella of self imposed idiocy due to lazy research and myopic views.

Try looking up Dr. Pauls record and ACTUAL stance on issues before you post tripe that makes you look dumb and foolish.

I don't blame Paul for trying to distinquish himself from the decidely uninteresting republican candidates. A fringe candidate always has to act like a clown to get attention. It's somewhat undignified, but then again, so is the whole process.

The bottom line is, Paul knows that the republican base has it's undies in a bunch about illegal immigration, so if he comes out strongly against it before the straw poll, he might at some attention.

But, he has no chance of getting elected.

Clair, here is another video about how our current system could affect the country in the long run: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5871651411393887069

I do not agree with the demonization of "illegal immigrants" especially when that is simply a racist pseudonym for Mexicans, but I do think that the policy needs to be looked at rationally. This billboard is racist because it plays into a very common stereotype.

We all know that what is meant by "illegal immigrants" and border control is "Keep the Mexicans out." But what about Europeans and Asians who enter the US on student or temporary work visas who never leave? They would be illegal immigrants too. I know there are more Latinos and Hispanics immigrating at least in states bordering South America, but we all need to be educated on both sides of the issue and stop hiding behind the "border control/stop illegal (Mexican) immigrants" mantra. It is the same as "States Rights" which during the civil rights movement meant "The right for states to segregate Blacks from Whites." Coded racist language.
