In a desperate attempt to be right about something, republican pundits like my counterpart over at Elephant Biz are still trying to project the latest fallacy of the Bush administration: that somehow the "surge" is working. There is plenty of evidence to the contrary.
First of all, Senator John Warner (R, Virginia) is calling for 5,000 troops to be sent home by Christmas time. This is the first time that the staunch Bush supporter has done anything other than toe the line for Bush and the warhawks. He just returned from Iraq. Why wouldn't he come home saying, "The Surge is working, let's keep them over there and see if it helps." But he did not do that.
Then, a new intelligence report, just out this week, reports a mixed bag of set backs and progress. The only real reason not to pull all the troops out right away is to try to avoid leaving more sectarian violence in our wake.
Oh, and I can't wait for General Petreaus' status report. It's being written by the White House. That should be interesting.
