The subject of religious faith has never been more present than in the current presidential candidate screening process. Mitt Romney is being criticized for the seemingly incompatibility of the Mormon faith and his own past actions. He seems to conveniently flipped on a number of issues including abortion and gay marriage.
Hillary Clinton is under fire for talking openly about her faith, though by all accounts she has been actively involved in her church and prayer groups all of her adult life. So much for the "godless liberal" picture of her that we get from conservative pundits.
Ben Smith's blog addresses the question of religion and politics and ponders whether Hillary is using religion to soften her image. Personally, I would much rather have a potential president simply explain their personal beliefs and move on, rather than use God as a political pawn.
George Bush actually said "I am driven with a mission from God. God would tell me, George, go fight these terrorists in Afghanistan. And I did. And then God would tell me George, go and end the tyranny in Iraq. And I did. And now I feel God's words coming to me."
If I'm not mistaken, isn't this how the prophets in the Bible and Jesus speak of being inspired by God?
So, if I had a choice, I'd rather have an atheist president than one who pretends to be the mouthpiece of God. Amen.
And Ben, I'm with you. Religion and politics are the most fascinating things to talk about. Sex too, but that's another post...
