It has always been an unwritten rule in political fundraising. The conventional wisdom is that republicans will almost always raise more money than democrats for elections up and down the ticket. Democrats have always relied on grassroots campaign tactics like doorknocking, baby-kissing and candy-throwing at parades to get their message out.
Those days may be a memory. The 2008 election is on track to be the biggest democratic landslide victory for the democrats in many years. Congressional democrats have out-raised their republican counterparts nearly 3-to-1 in the latest reporting period.
In an even more incredible turn of events, the democratic presidential candidates have also made incredible strides in fundraising this year.
Though Romney and Giuliani have both outraised the others in the republican field, the other candidates are struggling. So-called "second-tier" democrats like Bill Richardson are raising respectable amounts of cash and showing a decent double-digits in Iowa.
Polls show that democrats are, in general, much more satisfied and excited with the pool of candidates in their party than republicans are with their choices. That is why many of them are so exciting about the impending announcement of Fred Thompson's candidacy.
The Demo Memo is predicting larger majorities in both houses of congress, a democratic presidential victory and return to the people's priorities in the next election. And it can't come soon enough!
