I have spent a few hours this afternoon looking at the Web sites of supporters of all of the republican candidates. I have noticed quite a few similarities and thought that I would share.
Number one: They are all scared to death of having a woman president, especially Hillary Clinton. It is almost embarrassing to read some of the comments.
I also do plenty of what I like to call "opposition research" by listening to Sean Hannity (also known as Sean Insanity) and sometimes Michael Savage. I stopped listening to Rush Limbaugh years ago. That washed up old loser is simply to mean and angry to even be taken seriously.
The one thing all those male radio hosts have in common: They're all scared of Hillary too. Even the women who call in to those shows show their ignorance of Hillary's political beliefs and views by calling her a "liberal." She's far from a liberal.
The second big thing I've noticed: They are all still in denial about their party's self-imposed downhill slide. The republican party has squandered the support of a broad coalition of conservatives on a variety of issues, mostly because of the polarizing way they use those issues in elections. They take an issue like gay marriage or abortion and twist it to the extreme during the election, then drop it like a hot potato once they are elected.
The third and perhaps most important observation: republicans use sexual issues to drive a wedge between "us" and "them." Think about it. What do these issues all have in common? Gay marriage, Hillary Clinton, abortion, stem cell research, abstinence only programs, "Don't Ask, Don't Tell..." Yup, it's sex or gender or sexual politics. The powers that be in the conservative wing of the republican party are trying to regulate the sexual proclivities, tendencies and activities of the American people. And the people are rebelling.
Now hear this: The American people care more about health care than gay marriage, more about a leader with a brain than a leader with a penis, and more about sexual education than sexual abstinence.
I'm glad the country is finally waking up from its long nightmare, and I hope our collective memory of these failed policies stays with us for a very long time.

Right on Claire! I am all for education and I have seen health teachers try to stick to the abstinence only script only to be bombarded with question about how to practice safe sex. I hate the politics of ignorance and emotion rather than education and rationale. It's about time people began to wake up.
