The republicans in congress, though in the minority, proved they could continue their do-nothing ways today. Sadly, the compromise bill was never given a chance due to the procedural manuveuring of a few naysayers. A few democrats crapped out too, stubbornly holding out for all or nothing for illegal immigrants.
The fact is...the lack of immigration policy in this country is causing chaos on the border and in border states. It's creating massive raids and deportations in places like Iowa and Nebraska. It's causing labor flucuations and shortages in California. It's causing the needless deaths of hundreds of immigrants.
I'm sure this bill was not perfect. For example, to me the provisions that didn't put family unity as a priority needed tweaking. But at least it addressed the major issues of border security, employer crackdowns and allowing immigrants a chance to become citizens.
The consequence is another half a year without border security, millions of lives and livelihoods at stake. Another half a year without getting the leadership change we voted for.
