This photo from the New York Times article shows the tense body language between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and our own G Dub at the G8 Summit.
My favorite passage from this article:
“There are a few areas here and there we will continue to work on,” she said, standing side by side with the president outside an elegant white castle on the grounds of the Kempinski Grand Hotel. When Mr. Bush turned to her and said he has “a strong desire to work with you” on the issue, the chancellor pursed her lips.
Bush was referring to his stubborn refusal to set global goals for greenhouse gas reduction. The Germans are working toward a goal of reducing emmission in that country by 20% by 2020. Bush is still advocating voluntary goals.
Bush is also trying to tamp down the flames over this insistence to build a European missle shield and re-stoke the Cold War. He's insisted that "Russia is our friend and the Cold War is over." But the Russians may well point some missiles at Europe. I'm sure the Europeans are sick and tired of being used as pawns this titanic chess game.
On a more positive note, G Dub was lectured by Laura before they left for Germany. "Now George," said Mrs. G Dub. "Remember the trouble you got in last time you saw Angela. She does not like to be touched. Let's keep our hands to ourselves, and when you get home I'll bake you a nice batch of cookies."
