The military has been having a hard time meeting its recruiting goals ever since sending troops to Iraq. Seems there are a lot of potential recruits and parents who have a really hard time justifying military service in an unjust war.
There is a group of dedicated soldiers who's contribution is not valued. Gays in the military.
The need for Arabic translators in Iraq is critically high, yet since 911, the military has dismissed 58 linguists because of their sexual orientation. Never mind the time and investment in training that has been made since their induction.
The military routinely screens its ranks for those who may be gay. Once someone is suspected, they can sign a piece of paper saying they are not gay. What's the point? It's not the enlisted men and women who mind serving with gay people, its the military brass who are scared of them.
Most of our allies allow gays to serve openly in the military. I hope that when a democrat is elected president, this is one of the first things on the agenda. "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" needs to be asked to leave.
