Yeah, it's about time.
The Senate finally passed stricter standards for car mileage, after a nearly 20-year hiatus of irresponsibility on this issue. The old standards were imposed in 1989.
The Senate voted Thursday to increase fuel economy standards to 35 miles per gallon for cars and SUVs, the first significant boost demanded of automakers in nearly 20 years.
The agreement was announced at a news conference and then quickly adopted by the Senate without a roll call vote. It scaled back tougher standards already in the Senate's energy bill but was still considered strong enough to have wide support from environmentalists.
"It closes the SUV loophole," declared Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-California, referring to current requirements that allow much less stringent fuel efficiency standards for SUVs and pickup trucks than for cars. "This is a victory for the American public."
Who can blame Congress for being distracted? They were too busy giving money away to oil companies to notice that the American people were taking it up the rear end. And Bush was there to make sure that his oil buddies all became sickeningly rich.
Can someone please tear off some pages on the calendar? I am so sick of Bush's presidency that I would like to just sleep through the rest of it.
